This is a great book if you want detailed explanations of the history and development of some of the standard topics in Number Theory such as divisibility, perfect numbers, quadratic reciprocity, modular arithmetic, groups from number theoretic processes, Pythagorean triangles, Gaussian integers, sums of powers and some Diophantine equations and on Euler, Gauss and Legendre. It is at undergrad level, but has an usual take on the subject. The fourth edition is 1985, the original was 1962, but a final section on Progress relates new results between those dates and the application of computers to number theory. Lots of exercises to do.
