First Hammond illustrated edition of Jane Austen's " Sense and Sensibility"
The illustrator Chris Hammond (1860-1900) was born Christiana Mary Demain Hammond. She shortened her name to Chris Hammond in order to compete better commercialy in what was at that time, a completely male - dominated profession.
This edition was published as a special Christmas gift edition a few months before her too early demise through tuberculosis.
Very rare and sought after Jane Austen illustrated first edition.
Overall good condition with ornate binding.
